Mural Project Peer Review

Please list each member in your group for the Mural Project and tell me the following:

  1. Did they help with the planning of the project?
  2. Did they turn in their images on time?
  3. Did their images fit the prompt decided on by the group?
  4. Did they help put the mural together?
  5. Anything else you want to let me know about?
Send this all in an email to bowie.comm.photo@gmail.com before Friday December 8th. If you think everyone in your group did a great job, and everyone worked well together, there is no need to send me an email.

Portraits and Self Portraits

You will be turning in 4 total images FOR YOUR FINAL

Here is what you need to do:

First - pick out 1 portrait and self-portrait. For these two images you can crop however you want to crop. This means you can make it whatever size you want to show off your photography skills and to send the mood and message you want to share with those two images.  When you crop, please make sure you set the resolution to 240. You will need to do levels and make the photo look good in Photoshop. If you are skilled in Photoshop and you want to do other effects with these two images - feel free.

When you are finished with these tasks please post these two images on your blog and label them Portraits and Self-portraits.

Second - pick out the portrait and self-portrait that you plan to use for your magazine cover when we return from holiday break. These images should be vertical and the subjects should fill the frame as much as possible. These images must be cropped 8.5 inches wide  by 11 inches tall and the resolution must be 300. I would prefer that you do not crop a really small segment of a larger photo for these two images. I wanted them to fill the frame as much as possible. You will need to do color corrections on these images by using levels as well. Do not do anything else to these images at this point. Later, when we return from break or the last week of this semester, I will share some tutorials on cut-outs and using text in Photoshop. For now, I just want to see the images you plan to use for your magazine cover. These may be the exact same images as above if you desire.

When you are finished with these tasks, please post these two images on your blog in a separate post and label them Magazine Cover Images.

Magazine Preview

This assignment consists of four sections to your blog post.

#1 - Magazine tips

After you shoot your portrait, you will use it as the central element of a mock magazine cover design that will occupy a page of an InDesign document.

To get this process started, you need to learn a little about magazine cover design.

Go to the link below:

http://www.pubexec.com/article/32-tips-tales-techniques-evaluating-appeal-your-next-magazine-cover-84611/1

Read the 2 page article about magazine cover design. The second page is much more important than the first page. On your blog tell me 5 things you should be thinking about when you design your magazine cover.

#2 - Best magazine covers 2013

Next, go here and look at some great designs:

http://www.magazine.org/asme/magazine-cover-contest/past-winners-finalists/2014-winners-finalists

Look at and read about ALL 32 designs, please stop when you get to the section called Cover of the Year. Make a new post titled : "Best Covers"

17 of them involve a portrait. Number  1-17. Figure out which ones are portraits (these will be the ones with people in them), start your count with the Section called News, Politics and Business. The first portrait is from the New Yorker and it has Michael Douglas on it.

Next to each number, write "Formal, Informal, or Environmental"

If you do not understand the difference between formal, informal and environmental - please ask!

#3 -- My Favorite Cover

Choose your favorite cover from the website in Blog #2 (with a portrait). Label it as "favorite."

Copy and paste the description from the web.

Mention what is communicated about the people in the portrait and how this is communicated.

You may consider composition, lighting, exposure etc.

#4 - Magazines Part II

You also need to know a little more information about the types of magazine covers that have been used through the years. Here are the most common types:

Cover types

1. Image Based
2. Illustration Based
3. Type Based
4. Concept Based

Here is the description and some examples of these types of magazine covers:

http://www.magazinedesigning.com/introduction-to-magazine-cover-pages/

On your blog, write a short (50-150 word) explanation of what the main attributes of each of the four types are. Use your own words, and DO NOT copy and paste.

Finally, what is the relationship between words and photos on magazine covers and why is this important?

Check list before the break

  1. Mural projects need to be completed and hung up before the break on Friday, please get those done and hung up first. Make sure your pictures are posted on your blog also, title the post, "Mural Project Photos"
  2. Take a look at the blog and your posts, complete anything that you have missing. Remember, I will grade zeros from the first 2 6 weeks (if they effected your grade significantly/failing) if you get them done over the break!
  3. Complete the "Portrait & Self Portrait" blog (below), if you have a camera over the break, TAKE THESE PICTURES!! They will be due December 8th and you may not have another opportunity to check out the camera.
  4. Most importantly, have a wonderful break!

Portraits & Self Portraits

Self Portrait and Portraits Intro

As we get ready to take photos soon on our new assignment, self-portrait and portrait photography. I thought you might want to look at some ideas and get something more than just looking at some photos. With that in mind - go take a look at these FOUR websites.

http://digital-photography-school.com/10-ways-to-take-stunning-portraits

and

http://digital-photography-school.com/tips-portrait-photography

http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photo-tips/portrait-photography-tips/

http://shutterbug.com/refreshercourse/portrait_tips/197/

After looking at these, find what you think are the best 2 or 3 tips and copy and paste them into a new post on your blog (I don’t need 2-3 tips from each site, but 2-3 total, but please look at all four sites).

When you go out to shoot these types of photos, there are three main types of portraits, the environmental portrait, a self-portrait and a casual portrait. Lets go find some examples of these types of images.

Google image search “Environmental portrait” and pick out 2 that you really like and post them on your blog. Tell me what you liked about the photo and why you picked it.

Google image search “photography self portrait” and pick out 2 that you really like and post them on your blog. Tell me what you liked about the photo and why you picked it.

Google image search “casual portrait” and pick out 2 that you really like and post them on your blog. Tell me what you liked about the photo and why you picked it.

Please write a paragraph telling me your plan for your portrait assignment. Answer the following questions: who will you shoot, where will you shoot, and what will you do to make the shot successful.

Be specific on all three answers. When I read it I should know who and where you will take the photos and I should know exactly what your plan is to make sure you get a quality photo.  Think about composition when you are planning these. I really want your self-portrait to be a more than just a selfie. I want to see insight into you. Who are you? What defines you? How can you give me a little insight into what makes you tick or something that you get up to do every day? What is your passion? These thoughts should come out in your work.

CAMERA CHECK-OUT:

You can check out cameras for your portraits and self-ports (which means you can keep the camera over break!!). Photos are DUE Friday, Dec. 8th. You must show me two DIFFERENT images for both your portrait and self-portrait. One of those for each MUST be shot vertically. I do have tripods and they can be checked out with the camera. They are not the greatest tripods, so please be careful with them. You can also find ways to set up the camera and use the self-timer without a tripod. You MUST use the self-timer for your self-portrait. NO ONE ELSE can take the photo, you MUST push the button yourself. If you take a camera over break, you are COMPLETELY responsible for the camera. Please think long and hard if you want to take on that obligation.

American Soldier

Craig Walker, a photojournalist from the Denver Post, tracked Ian Fisher's introduction to the Army from high school graduation through basic training and through a yearlong deployment in Iraq. The images Walker took capture Fisher's day-to-day experiences as a recruit, soldier, son and friend. Walker and his team were awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for this photo series.

I would like for you to look at some of the award-winning images produced by this photographer and reflect upon how the images tell a story without even having to read the story. In addition, I want you to pay attention to the captions that were written for the images.

1. Go to the following Web site:

http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site36/2010/0412/20100412_011334_Ian_Fisher_American_Soldier.pdf

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?

B. How do the images work together to tell a story?

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?

D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?

F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average?
2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide?
5. Do any captions include a quote?
6. Are there any that have four sentences?

G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions?

H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all?

FOR EXTRA CREDIT - because this is such a long reading, if you complete this extra credit, I will add 5 FULL points to your overall grade at the end of the six weeks. This must be posted on your blog by Friday, Nov. 3 to receive credit (Warning: do not skip other assignments to do this one, its not worth it, this is only for those people striving for the highest possible grade in my class or for those people who are trying to make up for a bad grade somewhere along the line):

Please read the story across those three papers

1. Briefly summarize the story of Ian Fisher. Please break this down by publish date. This means I want three separate summaries of a paragraph for each of the three days the paper published the story.
2. What was his motivation for joining the military?
3. What kind of problems did he encounter during basic training?
4. What part of Ian's pre-military life caused him the most problems as he was being trained and while on deployment?
5. What happened when Ian had a mid-tour break and returned home?
6. How did Iraq change Ian?

Video Composition and Shots

Ok lets start talking video! Read the following articles and tell me 5 things that will be different (regarding composition) with video vs. still photos. Then I want you to pick stills from one of your favorite movies (school appropriate!) that represent the 10 rules of composition from the previous assignment.

1. Rule of thirds
2. Balancing Elements
3. Leading Lines
4. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)
5. Viewpoint
6. Background
7. Create depth
8. Framing
9. Cropping
10. Mergers and avoiding them

https://www.videomaker.com/article/c02/18610-the-basic-rules-of-composition

https://diyvideoeditor.com/shooting-better-home-videos-6/

Now that you have reviewed composition and how it relates to video, I want you to read the following articles on framing/shots for video. Then I want you to pick stills from one of your favorite movies (a different one from the last question) showing examples of the following shots:

1. Aerial Shot
2. Establishing
3. Close Up
4. Extreme Close Up
5. Medium
6. Over the Shoulder
7. Low Angle
8. High Angle
9. Two-Shot
10.Wide (Long)

Finally, I want you to write about a brief movie idea that you could complete for this class. The theme for this project is "World Improvement." Possibilities may include advertising/showcasing an anti bullying campaign, the benefits of veganism, pet adoption vs puppy mills, etc. I am happy to discuss/help you come up with something if you are struggling for ideas. **Hint hint! We will be using some of the best ideas for our next project!

The Dispatch

Please review the Bowie Dispatch website http://thedispatchonline.net and write about 2 stories that you found interesting, 3-5 sentences per story.

Composition Part II

Rules of Photography Part II

Earlier this year you learned the 6 basic composition rules of photography. Those included:

Rule of Thirds
Balance/Balancing Elements
Lines/Leading Lines
Simplicity/Background
Framing
Avoiding Mergers

Today we are going to add 4 more rules for you to think about as you continue to shoot for this class. They are:

Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)
Viewpoint
Create Depth
Cropping

We are also more clearly defining the first six rules, so their names are changing slightly, be aware of those changes.

Check out the new rules here, you can ignore the one at the end called Experiment and sub in Avoiding Mergers:

http://www.photographymad.com/pages/view/10-top-photography-composition-rules

Please pick a theme, I don't care what theme you choose: football, guitars, Justin Beiber, whatever.
Then use google search and find photos relating to your theme.

Find photos that show good examples of the following photo composition rules. Show me that you understand these rules. Make sure to tell me which photo = which rule, i.e. label your photos with the proper rule title.

Here are the rules again, in case you forgot in the last 2 minutes:
1. Rule of thirds
2. Balancing Elements
3. Leading Lines
4. Symmetry and Patterns (repetition)
5. Viewpoint
6. Background
7. Create depth
8. Framing
9. Cropping
10. Mergers and avoiding them - here I want you to find me a COOL merger photo. EXPLAIN how it did not avoid merger.

Funny Captions!

I am sorry I am out again today, I will be able to check out camera equipment starting on Monday.

Funny Captions - the right way!!

I call this assignment: FUNNY CAPTIONS. Make sure you follow the rules at the bottom, and get in the habit of doing this because from now on you will be asked to write a captions on photos you take and post on your blog, where appropriate. I expect you to learn how to do it correctly and following the rules listed below.

Go to the following site and find the three funniest photos that capture some kind of action or emotion.

http://www.you-can-be-funny.com/Funny-Old-People.html

Save your three favorite photos in your folder on the server, and upload them to your blog. Under each photo write a funny, two sentence, caption that follows these rules:

Caption Rules:

1. First sentence includes major information about the photo (who, what, where, when, why, how). You may make up the information for this assignment.

2. First sentence should be written in present tense as if the action of the photo is still happening.

3. Second sentence should be past tense, and should include background information.

4. Information in the second sentence should not be obvious by looking at the photo.

5. If there are three or fewer recognizable people in the photo, you must give all of their names (you can make them up for this assignment).

6. Use strong action verbs whenever possible.

7. Make these funny.

This will likely not take you the entire class to finish. Please work quietly on something for another class when you are done. Thanks!!

Abandoned Theme Parks

Go check out these two websites and look at the Abandoned Theme Parks around the world that some photographers think are potential places to take interesting photos.

http://www.therichest.com/expensive-lifestyle/entertainment/10-of-the-creepiest-abandoned-amusement-parks/

I will go over the camera check-out procedures with you at some point today in class. This will be the first day to plan your project. I expect a detailed plan from you on your blogs. I need your team theme and team names on your blogs. I also need to see details of every photo that will appear on your mural and who will be taking those photos on your blog. Please make sure your plans also include how you are going to get team members names and the name of your project on the mural itself. This is due today.

When you are done planning, make sure everyone knows their part in the process.

Here are the deadlines:

All photos must be turned in to me to be printed BEFORE Wednesday, Nov. 1.
The Mural itself must be completed by Friday, Nov. 10.

You will have in-class time to work on the actual mural itself (3 full class days) - but we will also have other things to do in-between so be aware of this. All photos MUST be color managed in Photoshop (levels) and you will crop the images 8.5 inches by 11 inches for tall photos, or 11 inches by 8.5 inches for wide photos.

When you have your images ready to print, ask me for a thumb drive, put your images on the drive and I will have Mr. Reeves print them and have them to you by the next class.

There will be multiple grades for this assignment:

A self-grade - grading your own efforts
A group grade -grading the efforts of the rest of your team
A deadline grade - achieving the multiple deadlines associated with this project
A completed task grade - your final grade, I will use a rubric for this and you will have it in advance

Mural Project Preview Assignment & Great Black and White Photographers part III

Mural Project Preview

Go to the following website - read the story and look at the photos:

http://www.geekadelphia.com/2011/11/18/instagram-meets-the-street-mike-smith-casey-catellis-nomnow-wheatpaste-art/

I know many of you are very familiar with instagram and some of you use it regularly. But this was a collaboration project that you read about. We will be doing the same thing in class.

On your blog please answer the following questions:

1. Think of at least three ideas you have about what your team could take photos of, that are in the same theme? Be creative, but be realistic. You will be shooting OFF campus, and every member of your team will need to be able to take similar photos or whatever you decide to do as a group.

2. You will be using the school cameras or your own similar camera. You will need to shoot in Manual. What are three things you will have to think about when you are out shooting?

3. Although we have always done this assignment as a paper/printed product. I am interested in being able to show off these images/creations/murals online. What are some ideas you have on how to get these pieces onto the internet? List three ideas and how you would suggest to your team this second product gets created.

Our next assignments will be to get into groups and start planning this project. I will be assigning the groups. Your group will meet to talk about theme and plan the project - each group will have its own and we will print them here in this room. We will use butcher paper to mount the photos on. You will take all the photos and I will help print them here in class. Then we will hang the murals around campus. Below are a couple of examples from last year.

Great Black and White Photographers PART 3

Today's Assignment - blog title
Great Black and White Photographers part 3:

I want to know more about your selection for your favorite Black and White Photographer. Read the following directions CAREFULLY!!! For those people that did not do the previous assignments, they are still on the blog and you can go back and complete them for credit on this assignment.

Do NOT sit and do nothing today. Everyone should complete some sort of Great Black and White Photographer assignment today.

On your blog please create a post with the following information:

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? Post the images with your writing.

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time in the assignment Great Black and White Photographers Part 2. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.

I see
I smell
I hear
I taste
I feel

You can do this in 2 ways. You can either put yourself in the photo and pretend your standing next to the subjects in the photo. I know smell and taste are hard but you can do it.

Or, you can pretend you were the photographer and use those same senses.

On the one titled - I feel - you may either touch things in your photo (imagination please!!) or you can tell me what you (yes, you in the real world) feel or felt the first time you saw the photo, or how it makes you feel when you look at it now.

BE REFLECTIVE HERE - try to be descriptive, try to write more than you think you can. One sentence per prompt is NOT ENOUGH, write at LEAST 3 sentences per!!! Write more, if you think its enough, its NOT.

3.) Finally, what would you like to create to show the world your great photographer. Ideas include, posters, power points, a blog, etc. You tell me what you would like to create so we can come up with a plan to share your thoughts and ideas about your photographer with your classmates and with the rest of the school.

Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO - What do they all mean?

The next lesson in our use of the camera and how it works involves what is commonly referred to as the "three pillars of photography." They are Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO.

Today we are going to learn about all three and how they impact our photography.

Let's start with Aperture as it is probably the hardest of the three to full understand.

Go to this website and read about Aperture:

http://mansurovs.com/what-is-aperture-in-photography

Once you are done reading - I want you to use google and find me an example of a photo taken at aperture setting F2.8 and an example of a photo taken at F16 or higher. DO NOT USE the photos on the website I sent you to, find different ones. Post those photos on your blog and label them.

Then answer the following questions:

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture _____________, the higher the Aperture ________________.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?

Now lets move on to Shutter Speed. This is a little easier to understand but we should read about it here:

http://mansurovs.com/what-is-shutter-speed-in-photography

Once you are finished reading about Shutter Speed, I want you to use google and find me an example of a photo taken with a high shutter speed and one taken at a slow shutter speed (you do not have to show blur unless you want but I still need to see an example of a photo that COULD have been taken at a slow shutter speed). Post them both on your blog and label them.

Then answer the following questions:

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Bulldogs and Hotdogs night, which was a few weeks ago, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:

At the beginning while the sun was still up and the courtyard had reasonable good light

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree
b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings
c.) the Stars performance inside the gym
d.) students dancing near the center of the courtyard
e.) people streaming in from the front doors
f.) the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.

a.) a booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree
b.) a food booth outside under one of the big red awnings
c.) the Stars performance inside the gym
d.) students dancing near the center of the courtyard
e.) people streaming in from the front doors
f.) the basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.

Now for the last of the pillars, ISO. Lets go read some more at this website:

http://mansurovs.com/what-is-iso-in-photography

Once you are finished, please go to google and find me an example of a photo taken at ISO 200 and a photo taken at ISO 3200 or 6400. Post both on your blog and label them.

Then answer the following questions:

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?

Now that we have a basic understanding of the three pillars, let's look at some direct examples of what happens in when you mess with Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. Go to the following website:

http://www.canonoutsideofauto.ca/play/

This simulates a DSLR camera. Make sure you set the camera on MANUAL setting at the top.

List the aperture settings available on this camera.
List the shutter speed settings available on this camera.
List the ISO settings available on this camera.

Now have some fun and play with the settings. We will play with this site or one like it more later.

Academic post shoot reflection and peer reflection

You should have 3-5 images from the academic shoot posted already. Please go back and edit the post with those photos - answer the following questions for each photo you turned in (either underneath the photo if you did 1 big post, or under each photo in your separate posts):

1. What composition rule did you follow the rule?

2. What is the subject (be very very specific)?

3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?

4. If you can't very clearly see what the subject is, what could you have done differently?

Second:

Make a new blog post - title it - Academic Shoot reflection and critique. Answer the following questions:

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?

4. What things would you do the same?

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?

Third: Now go and critique someone else's work (1st period, you will need to do this next class, I will allow time for you to complete this task):

Step 1:Pick someone else's blog to look at that is not in this class from the blog list.

Step 2: On your blog copy and paste the link for the student's blog.

Step 3: Write two positive things about the photos.

Step 4: Write about one thing that could be improved in the photos.

Step 5: Leave them a comment on their blog about their work. You can choose to write something clearly positive, or you can choose to leave a comment that is constructive criticism (something that is written in a positive way, but makes a suggestion on something they could have done better).

I will grade both that you did this correctly with a DIRECT LINK to their blog, and I will grade the comment you left them for appropriateness.

Basic Photoshop Adjustments

Now that you have taken your Academic pictures, here is a quick and easy way to edit them in Photoshop. If you have already posted them, please go back and edit the pictures and re post.

This is a quick tutorial on how to edit photos in Photoshop. If you need help to do these steps, please ask and I will help you.

Color

Color changes take a little longer and can be much more evident to the eye.

1. Open the photo in Photoshop, you can go to the search tool on the top right of your desktop and type in Photoshop.

2. The first thing we want to do every time is to SAVE AS and rename your photo and save it in the correct folder. For right now that folder is your folder on the  desktop.

3. Go to – Image>Adjustments>Levels

A box should pop up on your screen. In that box is a drop down box that has RGB in it. Use the drop down box and go to >BLUE

Move the black and white slider tools (the hershey kisses) and move them as needed to be underneath the mountain.

go to >GREEN
repeat

go to >RED
repeat

go to >RGB

On this step you move ONLY the middle one which is brown (do not move the black or white slider) just slightly where the photo appears a little lighter than perfect.

4. The final step, go to >Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen

You should only do this one time

5. Crop and make sure you have the correct resolution as requested. Today you do not have a specific Height and Width (that will change later) and your resolution is blank (that will also change later).

6. To change the photo to black and white go to: Image>Mode>Grayscale

when the pop up appears asking if you want to discard the color information, hit yes or okay. Soon you will be asked to produce a B&W image. Today your images can be color. If you want to make one of them Black and White, I am okay with that.

7. Save and close the file

Academic Shoot

Once you have your blog set up and updated, you may go out and take photos for the Academic Shoot.

Here is the assignment:

You will go out around the Bowie campus and go into classrooms and take photos. There are some rules about this - you MUST get permission to take photos in any classroom, so knock politely and ask permission to come in. If the teacher says no, please find another teacher. I have sent an email to the campus letting them know that you may come to their rooms. I highly recommend classes where there is something going on - like a science class or perhaps engineering or even culinary. DO NOT go to PE or any sort of dance or place where there is lots of movement going on, we will do motion later and the cameras are not set up to shoot motion yet. I expect you to stay with your partner/team at all times, the camera is your pass.

What will you shoot?

Your goal is to get high quality, peak of the action photos where you fill the frame and tell a story of what is going on in that classroom. If you know the saying - a picture is worth a 1000 words - this is the concept we are going for.

Do I need to do anything else?

Why, yes, you do. I expect you to turn in 3-5 really good photos. I also expect to see some sort of rules of photography evident in each of your photos. You will be asked to reflect on your work afterwards, and you will also be completing a peer reflection as well, so be ready to defend your work in writing.

Do you remember the rules of composition we have covered?

Here they are again:

Lines
Balance
Simplicity
Rule of Thirds
Framing
Avoiding Mergers

But remember the focus is Academics. Each photo must have "Academics" in it.

Out with BLEND in with BLOGS!

This year we will be using blogger to publish and post all of our assignments on the internet.
To accomplish this we have to set up an account: Please follow the instructions carefully. Its important that you do each step correctly and that you remember all the vital information so you can get back to it later.

Here's how:
What you will need
· Internet access
· An Email account

First – Create a Blogger account
Open Safari - you can use Chrome, but sometimes the interface between the Macintosh computers and Chrome can cause problems. Safari is the native internet browser for Macintosh, so its the one I recommend.
· Go to  http://www.blogger.com/
· Click on the orange "Sign Up" box at the top right of your screen - if you have a gmail - this will be really easy because blogger is a gmail product.

In “Step One”
· Enter your gmail address
· Enter the password for your gmail
· Enter a display name – Do NOT use your full real name. To be safe, we will keep our blogs semi-anonymous - I recommend you do something like Firstname_lastinitial_blog, or something similar. No one can see this unless you leave your computer logged in on accident, but lets be safe.
· Enter the word verification
· Click on the “accept terms box, and hit continue·
· If there are any problems, they will show up in red.
Fix the problems

In “Step Two”
· In the blog title box, enter “first name’s Photojournalism Blog” (Ex Michael’s Photojournalism Blog) - this is what will show up at the top of your blog - My blog is called Bowie Photojournalism.
· In the (URL) box, enter the same thing as the title, but with no spaces or apostrophe (Ex: mattsphotojournalismblog) - this URL can be seen by anyone, so please keep it school appropriate.
· Hit “Check Availability”
· If it is available, hit continue. If it is not, select one of the suggestions, and then hit continue.
· Select a template and hit continue·

You did it!

Now make your first post on your new blog:

Hit “Start Posting”
Type “Welcome to my blog” in the post subject line, and hit “Publish Now”
Click on “View Blog” to see the results.

Select and copy the web address (URL) of your new blog
(ex: michaelsphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com)

Open your personal gmail, not your school gmail and send an email with the following info to:
bowie.comm.photo@gmail.com

Subject : My blog
Full Name: ____
Paste URL here: ______

Merger Photo

Merger photo, looks like this:

To make this photo, you will take at least 5 images (you can take as many as you want, as long as you are careful, usually 7 or 8 is about all you can get) of the exact same background, but you will have to physically move around in each image. As you can see above this student took 5 photos and moved from left to right across the background as she went.

Students have done a variety of things through the years of doing this assignment, from spelling out words with their arms (think YMCA), to writing words on a paper and showing a different word in each photo. Also, you should think about how you can position yourself besides across the plane of the photo, think about height and depth as well.

In a blog called Merger Photo, please answer the following questions.

1. Is there something you see in the photo above that you think could be a problem when you take your photos? Look carefully.

2. Where do you think would be a great place to take this type of picture here on the Bowie campus?

3. Can you think of something creative to actually DO in the photo when you take yours?

4. Is there something you could wear that would help you when you do this photo?

Steps to follow during Merger Photo Shoot:

Select a partner.

Pre-plan with your partner. What are you going to do in each photo?

Beware of shadows!

Make sure the camera does not move between each photo. Even a slight jiggle of the camera can throw it off.

Your merger photo must include at least five different poses.

Merger Photo Photoshop/Submission Directions

SETTING UP LAYERS:

Open each of the photos that you want to merge in Photoshop.

ONE AT A TIME, separate the photos from the bar on top

Starting with the second photo, drag the Background Layer to the first photo.

Then go to the third photo, drag the Background Layer to the first photo.

Then go to the fourth photo, drag the Background Layer to the first photo.

Then go to the fifth photo, drag the Background Layer to the first photo.

USING LAYERS and ERASER TOOL:

Once you have combined all four layers onto one photo you are ready to begin erasing the background.

Select the Eraser Tool from the Toolbar

Click on Layer 4 (or the last layer you added to your image)

Using the Eraser tool, look for the position of your subject on Layer 3 (or the second to last layer you added) and begin to erase where the subject is positioned. YOU SHOULD SEE THE SUBJECT SHOW UP. Erase the entire background fully EXCEPT the original subject.

NEXT, using the Eraser tool ON LAYER 3, you should erase in the area where the subject is on Layer 1 as well as the Background Layer. YOU HAVE TO ERASE THROUGH ALL THREE, R FOUR OR FIVE LAYERS (depending on how many you have) TO SEE ALL FIVE OF THE SUBJECTS IN ONE IMAGE.

NEXT, when you are finished erasing ON LAYER 3, you should erase in the area where the subject is ON LAYER 2.

Repeat this process until you have finished with all of the layers and you don't see any problems with LIGHTING or ALIGNMENT.

POSTING DIRECTIONS:

YOU CANNOT POST A PHOTOSHOP (or .psd) format file to Blogger. You must save your final product as a JPG format. Before you can save your file as JPG, you must FLATTEN your PSD file.
TO FLATTEN: Click on LAYER at the top of your Photoshop Menu Bar and then click on FLATTEN IMAGE.

Save your final product as a JPG with the following format for the name: LastName_FirstName_Merger.jpg. MAKE SURE YOU ARE SAVING AS A JPG FORMAT.

When you are done POST YOUR MERGER PHOTO on your blog.

GOOD LUCK!

Portfolio and Car Raid Extra Credit

FINAL PORTFOLIO

All of the items on this exam appear on your blog and should be archived in your folder on the server. If you are missing any items on the list – on that page please just put MISSING. You will lose points for any missing items, unless you were not in my class at the time of the assignment. If you were not enrolled in my class for any of the assignments, please just put NOT IN CLASS on that page. These are two very different things - missing and not in class....FYI.

If you pull photos directly from you blog - they will be pixelate and you will lose points for each pixelated photo, but if that is the only place you have the photo, you should get something on each page if possible. If you pull photos from your server drive files they will not pixelate and those will be acceptable for this assignment.

The best practice for sizing images is to use Photoshop to make them fit, but some of you know shortcuts - if you hold the command and shift button at the same time you grab the corner of your photo you can change the size of the photo without making the photo look funny. If you photos look funny (i.e. skinny or fat) you will lose points, so please do this correctly.

Here you go!! Good luck!!

Please launch InDesign

Create a new document

Make the document 21 pages long (unless you have Extra Credit photos, then make it 22)

The document size should be letter size (should be the default)

Page 20 - HDR (1 or 2 images)
Page 21 - Extra Credit - Car Raid, Architecture,  2nd Merger, or 2nd HDR images. If you have more than one of these, you may need to add an additional page to this document. Ask for help if you cannot figure it out.
Page 22 (or 21 if you don't have extra credit) – Please answer the following questions, I expect you to write at LEAST 3 sentences for each question so you will have to answer WHY for each of the questions:

1. What was your favorite assignment this year?

2. If you were telling an eight grader about this class, what would you tell them?

3. Which photo that you took was your favorite this year?

4. Why was that photo your favorite?

5. What rules of photography did you follow in that photo?

6. What was your least favorite photo you took this year?

7. Why was it your least favorite?

8. What one thing will you take from this class into the real world with you?

Please convert this InDesign document into a .pdf at the smallest file size and email the entire document to me at bowie.comm.photo@gmail.com. This assignment is due by the end of the semester, you will have two class days to work on the assignment. Grading will basically be 5 points per page.

Extra Credit opportunity below:

Car Raid

Basically you will be writing a story about someone, a personality profile if you will, based on what you find in their car and interviewing them IN THEIR car. The main subject of your story doesn't have to be about their car, but the story should develop from what you found in their car.

Here is the assignment:

This assignment will be DUE on the last day of the semester which is Wednesday, May 24th.

HDR Photography Preview

Our next assignment is called High Dynamic Range photography.

Here is information on shooting HDR images:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/photography/what-is-hdr-beginners-guide-to-high-dynamic-range-photography/

And here are some great examples:

http://digital-photography-school.com/19-beautiful-examples-of-hdr-done-right/

http://www.thephotoargus.com/inspiration/50-incredible-examples-of-hdr-photography-done-right/

Next class, if the weather cooperates we will go out and shoot an HDR image together and process it in Photoshop.

On your blog, pick a couple of images you found that were processed in HDR and post them on your blog in a post titled HDR photography.

Please answer the following questions:

1. What manipulations to the camera will you need to make to create an HDR image?
2. What equipment will we use to take this type of image?
3. What is the reason someone might take an HDR image?
4. What can we expect to happen with the images once we merge them together, what will we see that we might not have seen with just one photo?

Final Exam Planning

Today as a warm up - so that means about 10-15 minutes to complete this task - I want you to share with me your plans for your final exam. This is your project, so there are multiple ways to share with me your plans. You could write a paragraph describing the plans. You could do an outline with bullet points. Or something different, it is up to you.

Please make sure to address the following items:

1. When will you shoot this assignment?
2. Where will you shoot?
3. What will you be documenting or telling your "story" about?
4. What equipment needs will you have to get this finished?
5. Make sure to describe the process, by this I mean, where will you use the video portion, where will you use still images, where will your narration be, etc?

Do not forget - this will take at least three hours to complete on the computer once you have gathered your pieces.

For those of you planning to use another computer program besides iMovie, here are the criteria you must meet to turn your product in:
It must be either a .mov file or a .mp4. Please downsize it enough to fit on a 2 GB thumb drive. You can render it out in 720 dpi or 1080 dpi. I do not want it to take 10 minutes to open and run on my machine. Once you get the file onto your thumb drive, I HIGHLY recommend that you put it into another computer and hit play to make sure it works right.

Infographic and Illustrator

Making Infographics to enhance a story

Overview: Infographics are just what the name implies: graphics that display information. There are lots of creative ways to do this. The better you are at designing infographics, the more likely people will engage with your story. You are creating a new "entry point" that enhances your overall design package.

Directions: To help you get used to creating Infographics, we are going to use a new online service that helps you generate cool looking Infographics.

Step 1: Go to http://infogr.am/ to sign-up for an account.

Play with the different features to learn how it works.

Step 2: Go to http://www.statisticbrain.com to find some interesting statistics that you could chart in an Infographic.

Step 3: Select the best type of infographic that will best illustrate the data you have selected.

Step 4: Make sure you have added a headline and all the appropriate labels for your infographic.

Step 5: Post your info graphic to your blog by copying the "Embed code" to your blog. You must switch your blog post to the "HTML" mode when you copy the "Embed code" into your post. If you cannot figure this out, let me know and I will show you.

When you are done with infogr.am, lets try to make our own using illustrator!

You will need to do any of these tutorials and post your efforts on your blog for credit on this assignment. Please remember that the object of this is to help you learn how to create art for the newspaper, so try to find tutorials that help with that task.

Here are some links and both have clickable links to other tutorials and sites so click away!!:

https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/tutorials.html

http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/articles/20-basic-illustrator-tutorials-every-beginner-should-see

http://www.good-tutorials.com/tutorials/illustrator/basics

You can also just google adobe illustrator tutorials and you will find lots of links.

For your assignment, I would like you to create THREE pieces of art that could be used in the newspaper. You can create straight art, or you can try to create items that use information and come up with an info graphic with text in it.

Here are some ideas, but feel free to come up with your own ideas and plans:

There will be stories in the paper covering these topics:

Why some students are waiting longer to get a driver's license
United Airlines, doctor dragged off the plane
FIT Bits
Sesame Street new autistic character
Bowie recycling
Samurai Jack
Pirates of the Caribbean
13 Reasons why
Snapchat filters

FINAL PIECES MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF NEXT CLASS. You will have about 25 minutes to convert them into .jpegs and post them on your blogs. Then we move on to high dynamic range images.

Do not forget that you should be planning and shooting your final exam ASAP. Also, the Graffiti and Found Objects are also due in just a few classes.

Examples:
